Gaming has been an on-going trend for many years and loved by many, from kids, working adults and even the elderly. For the past few years the government has open up towards Gaming and have provided support, publicity and recognition towards it.

In the last couple of years, many local government educational institutes such as Polytechnics and Universities have hosted gaming tournaments in school campus. Now even Informatics, a private institution is following their footsteps and doing the same.

Informatics is a local private educational institution established for number of decades. Previously having outlets at different districts, their management style was rather commercialized and not at all students oriented.

However, with the new campus setup in the beginning of 2005, uniting all students of different races under one roof, improvements were made and it’s more like an actually school then ever. Student finally had an actually school compound giving them a certain sense of belonging they have not experienced previously.

To further improve student life in campus, more student activities have been organized, activities such as Sports Day, Overseas Trips and now the upcoming Super Gamers Competition (SGC) - organized by Informatics Education.

This upcoming tournament is opened to the public but only ages within 15 to 19. The Preliminaries Rounds are scheduled on October 24, 2006, which would last all the way till January 2007 – Grand Finals.

There will be 3 qualifying rounds before the Finals. During the Preliminaries Rounds only 32 players will qualify to enter the Quarter Finals, after which only 16 will qualify for the Semi-Finals, and lastly only 8 will qualify for the Grand Finals.

The rules and regulations set by the organizing committee differs from what we usually have seen or experienced at past Gaming Tournaments such as the World Cyber Gamers or those organized by other institutions. During this tournament each player has to be flexible and prepared for the unexpected as the entire tournament will comprise of a mixture of the following:

1. Single player versus game pot or computer
2. Single player versus single player
3. Multiple players versus multiple players

To make the tournament more exciting and unpredictable then it already is, the mode of game play for each round will be revealed to the competitors only days before the actual tournament. And as mentioned in the official website, "the organizers have the right to do so to make the competition more interesting and unpredictable".

Not the everyday Gaming Tournaments you use to see, correct? Could this be another step towards creating a new style of "Professional Gaming Standards"? After all, games like Counter-Strike is a test of reaction, practice, talent as well as flexibility.

Anyway, tough as it may be, the winner of this tournament will not be mistreated for his efforts. The winner for this tournament will receive:

- Trophy
- SG$ 3,000 cash prize
- International Diploma in Gaming and Animation Technology course (worth SG$ 8,000)

Not too bad for his or her efforts. Too bad I’m above the age limit otherwise I’d probably take my chances.

If you’re interested in participating in this tournament and would like to find out more details, it’s best to view their official website.
