In the olden days, matchmaking for us, the Chinese, are considered a common practice. Basically this is how it works. Parents engage matchmakers, giving them their child's "shen chen ba zhi" (date of birth and such) with the stated criteria, and the matchmakers would find suitable candidates for them to select then arrange for the blind dates.

Nowadays, we've somewhat stopped this "practice", due to the rights of free will.

However, matchmakers have come to learn that to continue in their trade, they'd have to come up with a new concept to attract business. In fact, this isn't really a difficult task...

In the past, parents go for matchmaking because they want a mate for their child to be compatible in terms of status and such. Nowadays, due to our intensive living conditions, we are lack the time to actually find our true "soul mate".

Thus, it's back to old school! This time round, it's not our parents doing the job for us, but we doing it for ourselves. And this is when matchmaking companies come in handy.

But the idea of free will is still implanted in each of our heads. Thus, we still want the freedom to make our own choices. Due to the efforts of innovative "matchmakers", that came up with new concepts to regain business, as well as technology itself.

We've discarded the term "matchmaking" and moved on with the term "dating" instead. And how does that work?

Basically in the process of "matchmaking", there is a third party that does the selecting of candidates that they feel is a match for you and try to hook you guys up. With the new concept "dating", the third party doesn't actually do the selection for you, instead you're thrown with the full database of candidates and you pick your own.

Doesn't that mean that we still have to spend the time to pick and choose?

Think again. With the help of technology, you can do this at your finger tips, with loads more choices.
