Why do people resort to doing "Background Checks" on others?

Well, in my opinion, it's because people nowadays cannot be 100% trusted. It's not that human beings are dishonest, it's just that human beings loves to exaggerate. And by doing so, the truth becomes... Well... Frictional?

Human beings have such great imagination, don't they? Oh well...
