We have "Return of the Jedi", "Return of the King", and now we have the "Return of the Mac clone"?

Well, at least it did, for a while.

Miami-based Psystar has begun selling a new computer that it says will run Mac OS X Leopard.

What's going through your mind right now? Duh. Mac clone Alert!

Psystar is touting the computer as the "Open Computer: The Smart Alternative to an Apple". We are calling it Mac clone + law suit.

I mean come on already... Haven't you read?

Apple's software license for Leopard, and any version of Mac OS X, requires that the operating system only run on Apple hardware.

For years PC DIY-ers and companies like Dell have begged requested Apple to offer a copy of Mac OS X up for licensing on non-Apple hardware, but Apple hasn't even entertained the idea, as far as we know that is.

As much as the hardware industry might want another alternative to Windows, many of the reasons that Leopard is attractive might have a lot to do with the fact that it's designed to work on a limited number of hardware configurations.

Geez. But of course, we can't blame Psystar for trying. They aren't exactly the first company who did that anyway.

Anyhow. If you must know...

Before it all went "offline" (or is it), Psystar was offering $554 "Open Mac" desktops with Intel processors, 2GB of memory, a DVD drive, and a copy of Mac OS X Leopard.

But like I said, as of now, I'm not too sure.
