This is some serious news...
SINGAPORE: A 20-year-old national serviceman died in hospital, nearly two hours after he fainted during training on Pulau Tekong on Tuesday morning.
According to CNA (that keeps "spamming" my mobile phone no thanks to my Twitter subscription), Recruit Andrew Cheah Wei Siong from the Basic Military Training Centre fainted at 8.35am while he was taking part in a 2km walk training activity on the island.
(Yes. It's a walk. Not dash, not run, not jog, it's a walk.)
The poor boy was rushed to the medical centre, arriving 5 minutes after, and was thereafter given immediate medical attention by the doctors.
At 9.24am, 49 minutes after he collapsed, Andrew was evacuated by helicopter to the Singapore General Hospital (SGH).
Despite the efforts from the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF)'s medical team to resuscitate him, he was pronounced DEAD at 10.50am at SGH.
OMG! It's like... Ouch?!
Perhaps this may sound cruel, but I really don't see how someone can die from walking 2 miserable km. I mean, according to the papers, he had no previous major medical conditions.
Okay, the previous death is due to a 21km run. God, it's 21km, and it's a RUN. It's like totally justifiable to die from. But 2 miserable km? You gotta be kidding me.
Let's put it this way, with my latest sensation with shopping, I walk under the burning hot sun from one building in Orchard to another for like the whole damn day, which is clearly more then 2km, and hell, I'm still living and kicking.
Geez. This is sooo totally creepy!
Kinda feels like the movie "Happening". God I don't want to die yet. I'm starting my new job as a Writer on Monday.
Anyhow.
For those that are going to the NS soon. Just don't think of it as you're going to die there. With all the "critical" events that has happened in the recent days, it's not at all as "deadly" as our parents may remember them to be.
Heard of mind over body?
For all you know, that poor boy might have been having nightmares of the whole "I'm going NS" thingy that cause a mental collapse, which somehow or another influenced his will to survive that cause his death.
Stress can cause DEATH! I'm sooo not kidding you.
The issue about stress literally killing a person is sooo NOT something new. The following are some "reports".
Irishhealth.com (October 18, 2002):
Work stress doubles heart death risk
Work stress significantly increases the risk of death from heart disease, the results of a new study indicate.
Researchers followed the progress of over 800 healthy workers at a particular company for an average of 25 years. The participants provided information on stress, blood pressure, cholesterol levels and body mass index, through a series of clinical examinations, interviews and questionnaires.
ScienceDaily (January 12, 2005):
Sudden Death From Stress Linked To Wonky Signals In The Brain
UCL researchers have discovered that a system which normally coordinates signalling from the brain to different parts of the heart may be disrupted in some people, making them vulnerable to potentially fatal abnormal heart rhythms during mentally taxing tasks or emotional events such as family gatherings.
FOXNews.com (July 05, 2006):
Ken Lay's Heart Attack: A Case of Death By Stress?
The death of Enron founder Ken Lay Monday, reportedly from a heart attack, has raised the question of whether stress can, literally, kill you.

"having nightmares of the whole "I'm going NS" thingy that cause a mental collapse"
That is really stupid. If that were the case, he would have died even before he got enlisted. It is no surprise that almost all recruits suffered from anxiety, depression and stress from the strenuous trainings and punishments. This is in no way a self-created stress, which denotes stress caused by internal pressures in a normal environment, in contrast to stress caused by both internal and external pressures in an abnormal & grueling environment. Period.

Well, then I have no explanation for someone dying from walking 2km.

I have always heard that you need to pace yourself and not just jump into something and make sure you are being watched by your doctor.

It's really sad that he died after just a short walk. Obviously there must of been something else up in his life. I wonder just how effective the Military really is?
