Businessmen/women will tell you that building a successful business doesn’t just happen overnight. Daryl Kang, 29, an entrepreneur and a blogger says, “It takes at least two to three years before you can see results.” Generally, it takes (at least) months before you can even conclude whether or not his/her business venture is even able to survive in the industry, much less talk about making profits.

A blogshop is the combination of the word blog + shop, which means opening an online shop using a blog.

The word blog is derived from the term weblog. It is some sort of a website, usually maintained by an individual, updated regularly by means of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or videos.

The process which consumers go through to purchase products or services over the Internet is called online shopping. The shops which they visit are called online shops. Basically, an online shop removes the physical requirements of buying products or services at a traditional retailer or in a shopping mall.

According to Daryl, “A blogshop is an online store that uses a blogging platform to publish their product.” He added, “It can be a simple one where money is transacted manually through Internet banking or an advanced one where there are shopping cart and credit card/Paypal payment options.”

Ultimately, starting a blogshop is a form of starting a business, the cheapest form in fact. But it is not a get-rich-quick scheme, that’s for sure. To earn you must sacrifice.

To achieve the status and earnings, you must be willing to sacrifice time and effort. You must be willing to take the time to learn and refine your own blogshop constantly, like every other business out there. In other words, while your friends are out shopping, playing games and such, you’d be at home reading, collecting feedback and finding means to improve and gain more visitors to your blogshop.

Many see the glamour of those that make big bucks through blogging/blogshops, but they fail to understand the pain and effort put in to its success. Building traffic to a website is like laying bricks to build a wall - one brick at a time, slow and steadily. You can get more manpower and do it faster, but that would eventually incur more cost.

Daryl feels that in Singapore currently, blogshops are not able to generate enough income to be self-sustainable. Reason being, Singaporeans are still not receptive to the idea of shopping online. ANdyStorm, 19 says, “Blogshops nowadays are run by students to earn extra income. I haven't really heard of a blogshop owner that does it on a full-time basis, unless you include those actual online stores.”

SweetGift is an example of an online shop whereas

anna-blogshop.blogspot.com, and

KittyMall are blogshops.

Myzaak on the other hand allows you to explore the hottest shops and products, get the latest shopping deals and read the recommendations from users on shops and products.

Daryl says, “We are seeing an increasing number of Singaporeans doing online shopping. I won't be surprised if anyone managed to run a blogshop full-time in the near future.”

Face it, with the rising number of internet users, creating blogshops or such are just too accessible to all. New blogshops are created on a daily basis, in Singapore and around the world. If you break them down, perhaps only one out of the thousands out there is truly able to profit from the amount of effort that they put in.

Nonetheless, unlike conventional shops/stores, running a business by opening a blogshop is much less pricey.

So, can blogshops make money? Yes, they can. But the question should be, how much?
