Do you feel like digging a hole in the sand and hiding your head in it from the shame of being a Singaporean? Well, watch this and that feeling might just hit you.
Our dear Miss World Singapore 2009 Winner, Ris Low says,
"Right now I'm studying, still"
We got that from the previous statement about your "Diploma in Healths Sciences AND Hospritarity..." I give up on trying to spell the way she speaks.
Seriously, it's starting to annoy me. What's with the "s" after practically every word. She's beginning to affect the interviewer. Talk about bad influence. Bad Eng-ma on the rampage.
And what the hell is "boomz" or whatever she said. Let's not even go into her "fashion style" it's waaay too depressing.
L2SpeakEnglish, like back to Primary School. God help us all indeed.

to all singaporean, please don't worry as i'm confident that she won't make to the next stage of the competition come the big day.. but, if by any freaky accident that she does make it to the top 5,
then we should be worried as IT WOULD BE A DISGRACE TO SINGAPORE ONCE SHE OPEN HER MOUTH TO ANSWER THOSE VITAL QUESTIONS & BE HEARD TO THE WHOLE WORLD! it is just like watching an episode from 'Phua Chu Kang pte ltd'!!

Sigh. The shame...
September 13, 2009 - 12:18am
For crying out loud !! .. What are the judges thinking of ?? Have they gone blind , mad , clueless !! I am speechless ! .. She's a laughing stock right now. It is so embarassing. There's no words to describe how shocked I am with the whole thing! She used the word BIMBOTIC .. hmm she sure is!!
September 13, 2009 - 1:13am
I wonder if she is just behaving bimbotic or really bimbotic. Guess I'll find out soon enough! (There's a reason for that statement. Going to have an up close and personal. Unfortunately.)
September 13, 2009 - 11:02am
i just saw the newspapers reporting on her bad command of English. I couldn't have agreed more with the angry netizens. She is really a complete disgrace to Singapore and to represent Singapore on the International stage? It is completely unthinkable. It would only be right to rethink the winner of this year's Miss Singapore. There is definitely somebody who's more worthy of that title.
She really pisses me off!
September 14, 2009 - 1:12am
It would be better to send someone with less beauty but more brains than send someone with more beauty but no brains.
September 13, 2009 - 2:45pm
I'm not surprised @ all, most Sporeans speak in that manner,if she speaks in broken English on an international pageant,Singapore will look like a laughing stock for everyone else to see.
Imagine if the judge ask her a question, she replies,"I want world peace lor, everyone here hor always keep fighting one,why so like dat,i dun know why leh,i think i very pretty one, will heal the world like Michael Jackson lor...."
It reminds me of William Hung from American Idol, she bangs....hahahaha!!!
September 14, 2009 - 1:11am
I beg to differ. It's true most Singaporeans have the tendency of using lor, hor, le, leh, la and etc. But that doesn't mean we cannot drop it when necessary.
Ris Low is not a good example of what Singaporean women are capable of. In fact, she is probably one of the worst examples. Besides, the problem with her in the video is not the Singlish, it's her disability to speak with intelligence.
Nonetheless, I agree she should not be given the chance to represent Singapore. I would rather she forfeit and we are not represented at all.
September 14, 2009 - 1:25am
Come to think of it, it isn't her fault. It's the judges. Any sane person wouldn't have let someone like her win the pageant.
September 14, 2009 - 11:27am
She popularised the word "BOOMZ"
A new Singlish indeed, quite handy to use

I am upset beyond words. Actually we need to blame the judges. Who are they? I read in the papers someone mentioning, "this is a beauty pageant so they are there for their beauty"....da???
Does anyone knows who were judging the pageant? Poor girl, she is thinking Hokkian and speakz de England I think.
September 16, 2009 - 1:56pm
you netizens are so cruel , i feel sorry for her.
September 16, 2009 - 2:10pm
C'mon guys, give her a break and leave her alone. Her english is not different from other singaporeans. The whole country speak that way, So, it is not really her fault!
September 18, 2009 - 4:44am
She's not suppose to be the average girl on the streets. She's suppose to represent the country. It's not her fault for speaking the way she does but to let her represent us is just embarrassing.
September 17, 2009 - 1:15am
Is this chick representing Singapore or China? She speaks English like a China girl!
September 17, 2009 - 1:33am
Princessa - you use the phrase "less beauty but more bronze". I think you mean "brawn". Then again, one always compares beauty with brains when refering to girls and brains with brawn when refering to guys. So the phrase used in your context should be "less beauty but more brains". Also, "brawn" does not end with an "s".
September 17, 2009 - 1:40am
Sorry, in my two comments about Ris Low speaking like a China girl and the one to Princessa about the word "brawn", I forgot to give my name. My name is Glen Nicolay.
September 18, 2009 - 4:41am
Thanks for the heads up. Brains is right, don't know what I was thinking when I replied -_-" Oh well.
September 17, 2009 - 2:35pm
Well, first of all, I must say that Ris has guts to take part in Miss Singapore cos not everyone wants to parade in some bikini in front of us guys. She scores high for bravery, not sure if that counts. Perhaps, she needs a speech instructor to get her corrected & speak better English.
We are always critical about our football team, swimming team & it would be good to see some positive comments from our fellow Singaporeans. I would say that she was giving her best & how could we fault someone for giving his/her best?
Have you heard the French or Italian trying to speak good English? Their accent is so strong, I dont even know what they are trying to tell me!! Perhaps, if the interview was taken in Mandarin, Ris will fare better. I just hope this wont have any negative effects on her life & destroy her self cofidence!
I am not sure how many of you have ever given an interview in front of the TV, but let me tell you something; most of us would choke on whatever we want to say.
BTW, I am not a fan & I dont even know who won the lasdt few Miss Singapore!
September 18, 2009 - 8:18am
I know that my English is bad and STILL is (in fact lousy).. and always having the fear of speaking it.. But today she gave me confidence in trying to speak it more often! People like me should thank her with tears.. lolx
September 18, 2009 - 12:54pm
hey Ris... be confident when u face the camera.... can see you are tooo stress.....since u won
MSP, do up grade urself and show the world u can do it.... jia you....
September 19, 2009 - 10:28am
Let's us not criticise Ris any further but to give her a chance to prove herself. She must brush up her English before flying away to represent Singapore in Miss Universe pageants. Failing to do so, the relevant authority MUST replace her with another competent pageant, maybe the first runner up. Please… our nation’s pride is at stake.
September 20, 2009 - 3:27am
No one would be bothered to criticise the average girl on the street that speaks poorly. However, as the supposed beauty icon of the nation, can we just sit back and let this slide?
She has to brush up otherwise, please for the love of god, step down. Nothing personal.
September 20, 2009 - 8:54pm
Give the poor girl a break. Ris speaks like an average Singaporean. AT LEAST SHE IS REAL!
In any event, since when does English become a criterion for the competition? Some of the competitors speak in their native language and use a translator!
September 23, 2009 - 12:22am
totally brainless bimbotic dumbshit... such a shame.. hope she can read this and get her eyes open...
September 25, 2009 - 1:33am
I agree that this has nothing got to do with her diction, but the intelligence to speak and answer questions.
Check this guy out from Malawi. William doesn't speak perfect english, but he expressed himself well.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=arD374MFk4w
Roll all of us back to 5 years ago, pick any one on the streets and the person could probably be speaking like how she spoke in the interview.
The troubled youths whom I work with these days speak way much better than her, express themselves way much better than her, even though in singlish. Besides, the singlish has cut down alot in this society. Even the ah lians and ah bengs speak perfect english.
It was reported on AsiaOne.com that she was guilty of credit card fraud. And not sure if they are allowing her to leave the country to represent Singapore or not. I hope they do not let her leave.

September 25, 2009 - 7:30am
My english isn't A* either but when i heard her speak during the interview, i just couldn't help bursting into tears!
I don't understand why people keep saying that she uses singlish.. It's definitely NOT! Singlish is a slang using the word/s ''Lah, loh, Meh..'' etc. She just has difficulty in pronunciation.
For those who say that average/typical singaporeans speaks like her, i beg to differ. Singaporeans MAY(or may not) speak like her, but only towards close friends/family memebers..NOT during a formal interview.
I wonder how the judges feel after seeing her on youtube! BOOMZ!! 'Siah suay!'
September 25, 2009 - 9:57am
A screwup is forever a screwup!!! Credit card fraudster to represent Singapore; A country that has low crime rate in the region??? Cannot imagine how she will reply when the judge ask her "What do you think of Honesty/Integrity???"
Please withdraw and save Singapore some face!!!
September 25, 2009 - 2:56pm
Cannot be too personal... However, as a representative of Singapore, definitely cannot have any criminal record...........

I totally agree with the above statement "Since when does English become a criterion for the competition? Some of the competitors speak in their native language and use a translator!"
This is what happens when we speak a language that doesn't really belong to us. Native speakers will naturally have a good command of their mother tongues, and in Singapore, English is NOT our mother tongue, it is just a language of convenience used between people who speaks a variety of mother tongues. Ironically, a large percentage of Singaporeans have poor command of their mother tongues too, especially the younger generation. In such a case, most Singaporeans are not good in any languages. By the way, Singdarin and Singlish are not languages, but a bastardisation of the true Mandarin and English language. It is sad that the situation turned out this way, but what can we do? I'm a language teacher and I too find it hard to help my students overcome this problem.
I have friends who travelled to Taiwan and China and spoke to the locals thinking that they were using Mandarin. Only when they found that the locals cannot understand them really well that they realised what they were speaking was not Mandarin but Singdarin. Similarly, there are Singaporeans who experience the same problem when they speak to native English speakers. Most Singaporeans DO NOT realise that they are using bad language. There are also some Singaporeans who laugh as other people's bad English, but do not realise that they can't even speak their mother tongue properly. It's time to wake up and think about this. If you can't even speak your mother tongue decently, on what grounds do you laugh at other people's languages?
September 28, 2009 - 9:12am
The china girls in Geylang speaks better english then her... God save Singapore... Is this the best we can get in Singapore??? Ask my ah mah to take part also can lor...

Damn funny,
I can't stop laughing throughout the whole interview, wahahahaha, really cheer up my day. :p
October 8, 2009 - 4:49pm
Red piece of "bigini"? Something that's "BOOMZ!"? "Sumting that shouts me"??? Is... Does she realise she SOUNDS like a bimbo? And yet she says... "I wanna show the world that not all beautiful people arr bimbotic". I'm utterly shocked and disappointed.
Singapore, (I'm a Singaporean) please don't send this person to Ms Universe if this person is your choice.
October 9, 2009 - 8:40am
It was really funny to listen to her "attempt" to speak english i could barely understand what she was saying. But in all fairness i think she deserves some sort of recognition for trying to speak it as best she can. I think she's brave for having been on tv speaking like that.
October 16, 2009 - 11:25pm
Leopard "Prints"...."nature greenS" or natural green???? What's that?
I had E8 for my "O" level English and I don't even speak this way.

wow that is something it hink that is interisting
October 30, 2009 - 8:43am
To be fair, many Singaporeans speak worse than her. Could be hypocritical to slam her for something most of us are guilty of doing. BUT, still. WTF. She has some narcissism issues.
January 3, 2010 - 7:59am

What a great laugh. If I was singaporean, I would be embarassed. But alas, beauty was never brains right!
